About this experience
Fort Charlotte sits 600 feet above Kingstown on Berkshire Hill, completed by the British in 1806 to defend Saint Vincent. The view from the ramparts takes in the capital, the harbour, the southern Grenadines, and - on clear afternoons - the silhouette of Saint Lucia to the north.
Walk the cannon line and you’ll notice something unusual: the guns face inland. The fort was built less to deter ships than to hold the high ground against the Black Caribs (Garifuna) - whose history is told in Lindsay Prescott’s paintings displayed inside.
